This 13-week case conference offers BIPOC therapists a supportive space to deepen their clinical skills and integrate relational psychodynamic theory into their practice. Each session opens with a group member presenting a client utilizing a psychodynamic framework. In the second half, the facilitator and fellow participants offer insightful reflections, constructive suggestions, and encouraging feedback to enrich the presenter’s understanding, enhance their approach, and address any questions. Each group member will have the opportunity to present at least twice. During their second presentation, the focus will primarily be on a process note involving the same client they previously discussed.
This group will operate within a psychodynamic framework, attending to unconscious processes, transference and countertransference dynamics, and the influence of early relational templates on current interpersonal functioning. At the same time, the group space will intentionally hold awareness of the broader sociopolitical forces that shape psychic development, identity formation, and relational experiences. This includes, but is not limited to, the impact of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, disability, nationality, immigration status, and language. We recognize that systems of oppression, marginalization, and historical trauma are not merely external realities but become internalized, shaping affect regulation, defenses, attachment strategies, and one’s sense of safety and agency for both our clients and ourselves.
Furthermore, as clinicians, we recognize how the aforementioned systems, along with power and privilege are not separate from the therapeutic encounter—they inform our countertransference, shape clinical material, and influence how safety, authority, vulnerability, and meaning are negotiated in the room. By integrating psychodynamic inquiry with an awareness of sociocultural realities, the group aims to foster deeper clinical reflection, support attuned practice, and create a space where both professional and personal dimensions of our work can be explored and held with honesty and care.
To foster a safe, supportive, and contained environment, this will be a closed group. Members are expected to attend consistently, arrive on time, and remain for the full duration of each session. As a community, we aim to engage with one another from a place of curiosity, openness, and mutual respect. Consistency and continuity are essential for promoting meaningful growth and the development of clinical skills.
What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy supports people in understanding their inner selves, including how past experiences influence their thoughts, feelings, and actions. By uncovering unconscious patterns and conflicts, this framework supports individuals in better navigating both their internal and external worlds, including the ways in which they relate to themselves and others. Over time, through deep self-work, exploration of early life experiences, and different decision-making, individuals often begin to experience improved sense of self and better quality of life.
